What are the technical rehearsals at the Sambódromo?

Free run-throughs on the real parade avenue, where each top school tests its samba, its drum section and its timing in the weeks before Carnival.

A school uses the night to drill its wings (alas), get the members used to the samba-enredo and simulate the parade from start to finish. Light and sound are tested too. What you do not see is the finished show: the floats, the costumes and the surprises stay hidden until Carnival.

That still leaves a lot. The bateria at full power, the mestre-sala and porta-bandeira, the baianas spinning, and a crowd that knows every word. Diário do Rio reports that the 2026 programme drew about 360,000 people to the Sambódromo. It is popular for a reason, and the price is right.

What is the 2027 technical rehearsal calendar?

Four nights: 23, 24, 30 and 31 January 2027. Three Grupo Especial schools rehearse each night, after the children's schools open the programme.

The order follows the parade nights. The first Saturday has three of the Sunday schools, the first Sunday has Vila Isabel plus two Monday schools, and the last weekend covers the rest. The children's samba schools, the escolas mirins, give their official parades at the start of the first three dates, and the Lavagem opens the last.

Want a particular school? Salgueiro, Imperatriz and Portela share Saturday 30 January. The champion Viradouro rehearses on the final night, with Grande Rio and Mangueira.

What is the Lavagem da Sapucaí?

The ritual washing of the parade avenue before Carnival, an ecumenical blessing with members of many schools. In 2027 it starts at 5 PM on Sunday 31 January.

Riotur describes it as a ritual to bless the celebration and prepare the ground for the parades. It brings together children from the mirim schools, mestre-salas and porta-bandeiras from all the schools, members of the old guard, the Afoxé Filhos de Gandhi, Catholics, Candomblé and Umbanda practitioners, and other religious and Carnival groups.

It is one of the gentlest moments of the season, a blessing rather than a competition. On the same night, three big schools rehearse straight after, so you get the calm and the storm together.

How do you go to a technical rehearsal in Rio?

Turn up. Entry is free, so arrive early for a good spot, and take the metro to Praça Onze, the nearest station to the Sambódromo.

The programme starts in the late afternoon with the children's schools, and the big schools follow from 7 PM or 8 PM. Each school needs time to cross the 700 m avenue, so three schools make a long night. Come for one, stay for another if the samba grabs you.

Plan your way home before you go. The Sambódromo is near the Centro, a fair way from the beach hotels. Go in a group, keep your phone out of sight and take a registered taxi or ride app back to Copacabana or Ipanema.

Technical rehearsal or a rehearsal at a samba school?

Do both if you can. The quadra rehearsal is a party in the school's own hall, the technical rehearsal is the parade on the real avenue.

From July or August the schools rehearse in their halls, the quadras. It is loud, packed and local, with the bateria a few metres away and the community dancing around you. The Salgueiro rehearsal goes every Saturday night with pickup from the South Zone and the Centro, entry and a shared table, from $80. The operator says the bateria's big moment comes around 11:30 PM. It has 17 reviews so far, all rated 5.0, and it cancels free up to 24 hours before.

The technical rehearsal shows the parade as a parade: the full length of the avenue, the wings in order, the stands singing. If you are in Rio in late January, add one of those nights on top.

What else can you do on a rehearsal weekend in Rio?

See the floats being built at Samba City, then dance at a roda de samba. Pedra do Sal is busiest on Monday nights, the day after a Sunday rehearsal.

The floats you will not see at the rehearsals are being finished in the sheds of Samba City in Gamboa.
