This is a drinks workshop and a samba class, held at a party hostel, not a samba show. It runs on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at Pura Vida Hostel, R. Saint Roman 20, in Copacabana. The workshop starts around 7:30 PM or 7:45 PM. You hear the story of Brazil's favourite drink, step behind the bar, learn to mix it and drink the two caipirinhas you make. The samba class starts between 8:00 PM and 8:30 PM: an hour with a professional teacher who speaks English, Spanish and Portuguese, with locals and travellers on the floor together. At the end you get a shot of Cachaça Gabriela, a Rio cachaça. On Tuesdays the Caribe Carioca DJs take over the bar after class. On Wednesdays there is live guitar before the workshop. Guests name Camilo as the teacher and say the cachaça flows generously at the workshop.
Many guests head out afterwards to a boat party (tickets at reception), a local samba event or a club. Those tickets and any transport are not included. Bring a passport or ID card (a copy is fine). The hostel is near the corner of Rua Sá Ferreira, the second house on the right as you walk up. It runs rain or shine and is not suitable for wheelchair users. For a full samba night after the class, the Lapa pub crawl and Pedra do Sal are the next step.
