Booking choice: The Salgueiro rehearsal with transfer, from $80 per person. Check dates Tour details
A samba school is not a dance school. It is a neighbourhood club that spends the year building one parade, and from the middle of the year it rehearses that parade in its own hall, the quadra. The doors are open, the drums are loud and the crowd sings the year's samba-enredo from the first line to the last.
For a visitor it is one of the best nights in Rio, and one of the least known. The halls sit in the North Zone and the suburbs, far from the beaches, and rehearsals start late. This guide covers the season, the main halls, what a night looks like and the free technical rehearsals at the Sambódromo in January 2027.
The quick answer
The schools rehearse in their halls from about July or August until Carnival, mostly at weekends. The easiest way in is the Salgueiro rehearsal with transfer, every Saturday night from July, with hotel pickup, entry and a shared table, from $80. In January 2027 the twelve Grupo Especial schools also hold free technical rehearsals on the avenue of the Sambódromo, on 23, 24, 30 and 31 January.
What is a samba school rehearsal?
A night at a school's own hall where the drum section and the dancers practise the coming Carnival parade, with the public singing along.
Each school has a drum section, the bateria, with surdo, tamborim and cavaquinho players behind the singer. There are passistas, the star dancers; the baianas in their wide skirts; and the mestre-sala and porta-bandeira, the couple who carry the school's flag. At a rehearsal they all run through the samba-enredo, the song written for this year's theme.
A big parade can have about 3,000 performers, and many of them are local people who rehearse for months. That is what you see in the hall. It is a club night, a concert and a training session at once.

When do samba school rehearsals start?
Usually in July or August, depending on the school, and they run every week until Carnival. Salgueiro rehearses on Saturday nights from July.
The season builds slowly. In September 2026 the Grupo Especial schools began choosing their samba-enredo for 2027, and the halls fill as Carnival nears. The album with all twelve 2027 songs is out from 29 October 2026, so the crowd knows the words by the summer.
Many schools also hold feijoada lunches, usually on Saturdays or Sundays, with live samba in the afternoon. They are a relaxed way to see a hall by daylight.

Mostly in the North Zone and the suburbs: Salgueiro in Andaraí, Mangueira by the Maracanã, Portela in Madureira, and Beija-Flor in Nilópolis.
The halls sit in the neighbourhoods the schools come from, which is part of the charm. From Copacabana or Ipanema, most are a long ride, and the drums come on late at night. That is the main reason visitors book a rehearsal with a transfer.
| School | Where it rehearses | Parades in 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Salgueiro | Its hall in Andaraí, North Zone | Monday 8 February |
| Mangueira | The Palácio do Samba, near the Maracanã | Tuesday 9 February |
| Portela | Its home in Madureira | Tuesday 9 February |
| Vila Isabel | Its hall in Vila Isabel | Sunday 7 February |
| Beija-Flor | Nilópolis, in the Baixada Fluminense | Sunday 7 February |
| Imperatriz Leopoldinense | Its hall in the North Zone | Monday 8 February |
What happens at a Salgueiro rehearsal night?
A band warms up the hall, the dancers and the flag couple come out, and around 11:30 PM the Furiosa drum section plays, about 60 drums at once.
Acadêmicos do Salgueiro is one of the great schools of Rio, red and white, and it finished fourth in 2026. On the Salgueiro rehearsal tour, the pickup is between 8 PM and 9 PM from Centro, Catete, Botafogo, Flamengo, Glória, Lapa, Copacabana, Leme, Ipanema or Leblon. The guide confirms the exact time that afternoon. Barra da Tijuca guests meet at the Sheraton Leblon, and Santa Teresa guests at the Vila Galé in Centro.
At the hall you get your entry and a shared table. The operator says the night opens with a band playing Brazilian popular music, then come the passistas, the baianas and the mestre-sala and porta-bandeira. The bateria is the peak. Food and drinks are paid at the hall, and the whole night takes about 5 hours.

Entry at the halls changes by school and by event. The Salgueiro rehearsal with pickup, entry, a table and a guide costs from $80 in 2026.
The schools post their own prices for each rehearsal on their social media, and they move as Carnival nears. What a package adds is everything around the ticket: the ride across the city late at night, a table in a packed hall and someone who knows when the drums come on.
The Salgueiro tour has 17 reviews so far, all five stars, and it cancels free up to 24 hours before. Drinks are extra, so bring some cash.
What are the technical rehearsals at the Sambódromo?
Free rehearsals on the parade avenue itself, where each Grupo Especial school runs its parade with the lights and sound. In 2027 they fall on 23, 24, 30 and 31 January.
Liesa set the calendar in September 2026. Each night opens with children's schools, then three Grupo Especial schools rehearse. On Sunday 31 January the evening starts with the Lavagem da Sapucaí, the ecumenical washing of the avenue, from 5 PM. In past years entry to the grandstands was free for everyone, and the stands fill fast, so arrive early.
Our post on the technical rehearsals has more on each night.

Can children go to a samba school rehearsal?
Yes, with their parents. On the Salgueiro tour, under-18s go in only with their parents and documents, and the night does not suit children under 5.
Rehearsals are loud and late. The drums start around 11:30 PM, and the ride home is after that. Teenagers who like music usually love it. Younger children do better at the Ginga Tropical show, which ends at 10:15 PM. At the Sambódromo itself, Liesa admits no children under 5 during the parades.
What can you do outside the rehearsal season?
See the floats being built at Samba City, take a class with dancers from the samba schools, or go out with a live samba band.
The Samba City backstage tour runs all year in Gamboa, inside Grande Rio's float and costume workshop. You try on costumes, take a short samba workshop and finish with a caipirinha, from $29. It is non-refundable, so book it once your date is fixed.
The Ipanema samba lesson is taught by dancers who have performed with major schools, from $24. The class and night out ends at a samba club with a live band, with your instructor beside you.

Do I need to book a samba school rehearsal?
Not at the hall door, but a package with a transfer needs a booking, and the listing marks the Salgueiro tour as likely to sell out. It cancels free up to 24 hours before.
What day are samba school rehearsals?
Each school sets its own days, mostly at weekends. Salgueiro rehearses on Saturday nights from July until Carnival.
Are the technical rehearsals free?
Yes. The Sambódromo rehearsals on 23, 24, 30 and 31 January 2027 are free, and the grandstands fill quickly.
Is a rehearsal the same as the parade?
No. At a rehearsal there are no floats or full costumes, and the crowd is part of the show. The parade at the Sambódromo is the competition, with floats and judges.
